    Gastric Bypass

    gastric-bypass-1

Gastric bypass is a bariatric combined surgical method that restricts the food taken into the body and reduces nutrient absorption by causing changes in intestinal functions.

With gastric bypass surgery, the stomach volume is reduced and food intake is restricted, so the patient is satisfied by consuming smaller portions without feeling hungry. At the same time, the absorption rate of consumed foods decreases. After the surgical procedure, the level of appetite hormone called ghrelin decreases and appetite decreases.

    Gastric Bypass Surgery

This surgical method, which changes the structures of the stomach and intestines, is performed in two steps:

In the first step, the stomach is reduced. For this, the upper part of the stomach is divided into two, with a small lower part (remnant) and a large part. The upper part of the stomach is the sac from which food is taken.

The second step is bypass. A part of the small intestine is removed from the digestive tract and the absorption path of nutrients is shortened. The second part of the small intestine is connected to the small sac formed in the stomach. The food taken first passes to the pouch formed in the stomach and from there to the second part of the small intestine. This is a kind of bridging method. After the surgery, most of the stomach and part of the intestine are removed from the digestive tract. With the shrunken stomach, the patient is satisfied with less food, and the body absorbs fewer calories with the new form of the small intestine.

Gastric By-Pass surgery method can be used in morbid obesity (body mass index greater than 40), type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and other comorbid conditions. This method is often used in the surgical treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes who cannot be controlled.

Who Gets Gastric Bypass Surgery ?

It can be applied to all morbidly obese patients whose body mass index is above 35 and between the ages of 18 and 65 whose diet is not suitable for sleeve gastrectomy surgery. It can also be preferred in patients who have had sleeve gastrectomy surgery before and have gained weight again.

Does Gastric Bypass Require a Hospital Stay ?

Generally, you stay in the hospital for 3-4 days. With the new generation surgical methods, the duration of hospitalization after surgery has been shortened. Depending on the problems that may occur during the preoperative evaluation and postoperative recovery period after Gastric Bypass, the duration of hospital stay of the patient may vary.

How Many Types of Gastric Bypass Surgeries Are There ?

In this surgery, 3 different surgical methods are used in total, depending on the doctor’s evaluations and the patient’s preference. These surgical methods are:

    ROBOTIC SURGERY

This method is performed with a few small incisions in the patient’s abdomen. These small incisions enable patients to return to their daily lives more easily after surgery. The healing process takes a short time.

    OPEN SURGERY

In this surgical method, a large incision is made in the patient’s abdomen. The biggest advantage of this method is that the surgeon can see the patient’s tissues more clearly. The size of the incision can delay the return to daily life and the healing process.

    LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY

It is made by making several small incisions in the patient’s abdomen. With a camera called a laparoscope, the patient’s abdomen is viewed in 2D and the operation is performed.
